We're in the early stages of planning for our Annual Santa Cruz Chapter Meeting this fall. We intend to make the "business meeting" short (report on the past year's activities, plans for the next, elect a new board and such) and spend most of the time learning about the innovative juvenile detention system in Santa Cruz County.

2007-2008 Essay Contest Winners!

The first ever Santa Cruz ACLU Civil Liberties Essay Contest for high school students concluded on May 15, 2008. Many wonderful essays were received. All the essays have been read and evaluated by a panel of 6 readers, comprised of 2 education professionals, 2 current UCSC students, and 2 other members of the local chapter Board.

Wedding Bells!A recent decision by the California Supreme Court recognized that marriage in California must be equally available for all couples, whether the partners are of the same or of different sexes.

Gay Pride Rally in Santa Cruz

Marching with the ACLU On Sunday, June 1, Santa Cruz held their annual Gay Pride March/Rally/Festival. It was a beautiful sunny day, and spirits were high.

California Supreme Court ruled on 5/15/2008 in favor of Marriage Equality

Today, May 15, 2008, in a powerful landmark decision, the California Supreme Court declared that provisions of the state Constitution protecting equality and fundamental rights disallow laws restricting marriage to unions of a man and a woman. This resulted from a lawsuit brought by the City of San Francisco and various Gay Rights groups, and was a suit supported by the ACLU.

Prison Industrial Complex Awareness Week

The Inside Out Writing Project has set up a weeklong event entitled Prison Industrial Complex Awareness Week. ACLU-Santa Cruz Chapter has signed on as a sponsor of this event. Throughout the week of May 19th through May 24th events will take place on the UCSC campus with the following goals in mind:
