DEBATE ALERT!  How is President Obama doing on civil liberties issues?

Many are talking about this, and opinions vary. That's why the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC) is bringing you two great speakers to debate this topic at our 2009 ANNUAL MEETING.

Annual Elections Meeting
Wednesday, November 18
7 to 9 pm
Louden Nelson Community Center
301 Center St. (at Laurel St.)
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

The annual meeting will open with a short business meeting, including a report on the past year's activities from our current chair, Martine Watkins, and a vote to elect our board for 2010. We will include some remarks memorializing Mardi Wormhoudt, who was serving on our board at the time of her passing last month.

Following the business meeting and memorial remarks, Mike Rotkin will moderate a debate on President Obama’s performance on civil liberties.

Spencer Critchley, Monterey County Democrats Communications Director, will take the position of Obama: Advancing Civil Liberties in the Face of Difficult Constraints.

Julia Harumi Mass, ACLU-NC Staff Attorney, will take the position of Obama: A Disappointing Civil Liberties Record.

Each speaker will have opportunities to stake out their positions, to rebut their opponent's statements, and to offer a final conclusion. Following the debate, the floor will be opened for questions and comments from the audience.

This promises to be a fascinating and valuable evening for all of us. We hope to see you there.

Yours truly,
