ACLU High School Essay Contest for Santa Cruz County

The Santa Cruz Chapter of the ACLU is holding an essay contest for high school juniors and seniors. The essay topic is:

 

Should students have complete freedom of speech on high school campuses, or should there be some limits on speech? For example, should students be allowed to wear T-shirts advocating illegal drug use? Should they be allowed to make racially or religiously insulting remarks to other students? Should freedom of the press apply to high school newspapers? If these kinds of speech should not be restricted, would you restrict other types of speech?

RULES: Referring to the Bill of Rights, current events or events from your own life, write an original essay of 750 to 1000 words, double spaced. Please include name, grade, and phone number.

First and Second place prizes in the amounts of $500 and $250 respectively will be awarded.
