Freedom Files - local screening and discussion

The Santa Cruz Chapter of the ACLU is hosting this evening gathering to allow community members to get together, learn about our government's policies and practices regarding torture, and discuss among ourselves what this means to us.

We're getting together at the 99 Bottles of Beer restaurant, in a private room with a big TV. Our local ACLU chapter will be providing free appetizers and a video. That video and the discussion which follows will provide much to think about. Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening.

We'll begin with a screening of the roughly half hour long video "Freedom Files: Torture and Unlawful Imprisonment." Freedom Files is a television series of documentaries produced by the ACLU. They draw on the power of true stories to highlight vital civil liberties issues of our time and inspire viewers to TAKE ACTION.

Following the video, we'll open the floor for discussion about what we've seen. The discussion will be moderated by Mike Rotkin, but will be fairly free form as we learn how our fellow community members feel about this issue.

The episode we'll be viewing makes the case that the U.S. government's use of torture, kidnapping and unlawful detention in the "war on terror" is undermining the foundations of our democracy.
