The ACLU Santa Cruz Chapter is sponsoring a panel discussion on privacy and social networking at the University of California Santa Cruz. The event is scheduled in the Humanties Lecture Hall B206 at UCSC for March 9, 6-8pm. FREE ADMISSION, open to the public.

Web sites such as facebook allow for unprecedented new exposure of our social interactions, as both casual conversations and intimate interactions may be posted in a fashion visible to thousands of other users of the social networking site. Many times, users are simply unaware just how exposed their information and photos are on these sites. But even more of a problem may be claims that all posted material becomes the property of the site owner (such as facebook) and applications which gain access to users' full profiles, friend lists, etc. Should this information be protected in some way? Are users aware of the exposure they and their private information suffer within the social networking site activities?

Speakers from the ACLU and riseup.net will paticipate in a panel discussion on privacy and social networking. As the internet grows it becomes easier for governments, corporations and individuals to invade our privacy online. Come to hear how you are affected, what is being done to stop the invasion of privacy, and learn about ways to avoid and fight back against those who can access your private information and share it.
